A Mexican guitar was the catalyst for the formation of Intercooler in 2001. Had it been made in the US, perhaps the story would read a little differently. Jaded by the ‘struggling artist’ cliché, Joel Potter (bass) hung up his instrument and pissed off to the UK, perhaps resigned to the fact that running around in circles for the sake of music wasn’t worth it. Meanwhile, back in Oz, vocalist and guitarist Phil Ballantyne was getting restless. He knew of the possibilities he and Potter could explore if they gave it an honest shot. An epiphany of sorts occurred when...
American Watercolor Movement draws us into a world all their own. With looping beats and a unique lyrical mutability, their songs appeal to our senses—imparting stories of lust, longing, traveling, searching—and we willingly submit to the highs and lows of their design. American Watercolor Movement began in 1998 as an experimental musical concept, evolving out of various musings and eclectic sounds. Their first CD, Flapjacks, Sunrise and Verne (Perhaps Transparent Recordings), displayed a krautrock-inspired style. Over the years, while still involved in other musical projects, AWM would hone their creativity, even as new members joined the collective, resurfacing in 2004...
One of the first progressive bands from Brazil, O Terço (meaning rosary beads) first formed in 1968, but didn't hit its stride until the mid '70s. Personnel changes would become part of the bands dynamic, with Sergio Hinds assuming the role of band anchor. The group owed a lot of its early sound to such Italian favorites as Locanda Delle Fate, Quella Veccia Locanda, and Premiata Forneria Marconi. They also manged to mix in other styles, like folk, and the most important: MPB(Brazilian Popular Music ), which made the band sound a little bit like Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim and...
A master of ethereal delicacies, Melbourne’s Wintercoats aka James Wallace combines his chameleonic compositional talents and profound arrangement dexterity to create aural artworks of fragility and grandeur. His debut self-released EP Cathedral adventured through sweeping and idyllic vocal harmonies underpinned by brash and heavily reverbed string loops. A search of his rawest emotions; through the endurance of despair, Cathedral was the idealization of tension and tranquillity, a release of inhibitions and a philosophical exploration of love, lust and social complacency. Mistletone will release Wintercoats’ Sketches EP on 12″ vinyl and digital release on September 30, in collaboration with Cascine. .
Hailing from Niigata, the cold countryside of Japan facing the Japan Sea, Paint In Watercolour were one of Japan's first shoegaze bands and represented the more obscure side of the Western-influenced and highly eclectic Shibuya-kei scene. The original members were Masato Nunokawa (vocals and guitars), Kenichi Sekiguchi (guitars), Manabu Shimizu (bass) and Shigemi Sakyo (drums). After releasing the six-song mini album "flow" (1991) from Victor's subsidiary indie label Aja Records, they made a major debut in 1992, releasing the "glare" ep and the album "unknown" in the same year. Their work showed influences from My Bloody Valentine and Ride, but...
