Fue formado en Basilea, en 1974, por su director Jordi Savall (instrumentos de cuerda con arco), Montserrat Figueras (vocalista), Lorenzo Alpert (flautista, percusionista) y Hopkinson Smith (instrumentos de cuerda punteados). Inicialmente fue llamado Hespèrion XX, pero a partir de 1999, el grupo pasó a denominarse Hespèrion XXI

Montserrat Figueras García (15 March 1942, Barcelona, Catalonia – 23 November 2011, Cerdanyola del Vallès, Catalonia) was a Spanish soprano who specialized in early music.
Figueras was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and began studying early singing techniques together with her sister Pilar Figueras in 1966 and developed an approach and technique for singing early music which combined historical fidelity with vitality.
