C'est en 1978 que deux lycéens, Yoshiki Hayashi et Toshimitsu "Toshi" Deyama, fondent le groupe "Dynamite", premier embryon de ce qui deviendra plus tard X Japan, l'un des groupes les plus représentatifs du rock/metal japonais des années 90. Les débuts sont laborieux : Toshi, qui se destinait à devenir médecin, renonce à son objectif en misant sur le projet de Yoshiki, tandis que ce dernier cherche à stabiliser le groupe à la fois au niveau des membres variant d'une représentation à l'autre et du nom : "Dynamite" en 1978, "Noise" en 1980 puis "X" en 1982 et enfin "X Japan"...
