Le groupe s'est formé dans les années 1980 a Cardiff, au Pays de Galles par Hyde, Smith et Alfie Thomas il avait à l'origine seulement un gribouillis graphique pour nom. En 1983, après avoir recruté John Warwicker et le batteur Bryn Burrows (anciennement Fabulous poodles), ils ont obtenu un contrat d'enregistrement avec CBS Records, et a rencontré l'insistance de l'étiquette sur un nom imprononçable, avec le compromis que les gribouillis a été prononcé Freur.
Leur premier et seul hit single (numéro 59 dans les charts britanniques), a été "Doot Doot" (1983).
