Nato in Nuova Zelanda, ma trasferitosi molto presto in Australia, Urban comincia a suonare la chitarra all'età di sei anni, donatagli dai genitori, fan della musica country. Dopo aver lasciato la scuola a 15 anni, Urban comincia a partecipare a vari concorsi e manifestazioni locali. Nel 1992 si trasferisce a Nashville, capitale della musica country, dove forma il gruppo Brooks & Dunn, dove ha il ruolo di chitarrista. In seguito si unisce ad un altro gruppo i The Ranch.
