ニック・ドレイク（Nick Drake、1948年6月19日–1974年11月25日）は、ビルマ（現ミャンマー）生まれのイギリス人シンガーソングライター。フォークの分野で活動。生前は商業的成功に恵まれず、3枚のアルバムを残して他界するが、死後に評価が高まった。 ビルマのラングーン（現ヤンゴン）で生まれる。父は、1930年代にラングーンに移ってきたイングランド人。姉のガブリエル・ドレイクは、テレビドラマ『謎の円盤UFO』等に出演した女優。幼少時に家族でイングランドに戻り、ウォリックシャー州で育つ。短距離走の才能も持っていたが、やがて音楽に夢中になる。 ケンブリッジ大学フィッツウィリアム・カレッジに在学中、フェアポート・コンヴェンションのアシュレー・ハッチングスに見出され、アイランド・レコードと契約。1969年9月にアルバム『ファイヴ・リーヴス・レフト』でデビュー。同作のタイトルは、「Rizla」というブランドの手巻きタバコ用の巻紙の最後から5枚目に印刷されている文言に由来する（「残り5枚」の意味）。ニックによるギター（一部の楽曲ではピアノ）弾き語りを中心としているが、一部の楽曲にリチャード・トンプソン（フェアポート・コンヴェンション）やダニー・トンプソン（ペンタングル）が参加。また、ストリングスのアレンジを、ケンブリッジ大学でニックと親交のあったロバート・カービーが担当している。 デビュー後、ニックはケンブリッジ大学を中退し、ロンドンに引っ越す。1970年11月には2作目『ブライター・レイター』発表。同作のレコーディングにはフェアポート・コンヴェンションのメンバーや、ジョン・ケイル（元ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド）等が参加した。ニックの音楽は評論家からは高い評価を得ていたものの、アルバムの売り上げは伸びず、『ブライター・レイター』も、発表当時は15,000枚程度しか売れなかった。 失意のニックはロンドンを離れ両親の許に戻るが、これと前後してかねてより患っていたうつ病が悪化。1971年に3作目『ピンク・ムーン』のレコーディングを行った頃には会話をすることさえ困難になっていたという。同作は、ニックの「飾りは何もいらない」という意向により、ニック自身の歌とギターとピアノだけで制作され、1972年2月に発表された。 その後ニックは、短期間だけ録音スタジオの仕事に就き、コンピューター・プログラマーにも挑戦したが、音楽活動も細々と続け、1974年にはレコーディングも行っている。その際の音源は、ニックの死後に未発表曲集『タイム・オブ・ノー・リプライ』に収録され日の目を見た。 1974年11月25日、自宅のニックの部屋で、母モーリーがベッドの上で息絶えているニックを発見する。死因は抗うつ薬の過剰服用。遺書はなく、自殺か事故なのかは明らかになっていない。部屋にあったレコードプレーヤーには、バッハの「ブランデンブルク協奏曲」のレコードが乗っていたという。 1980年代以降、ニックの再評価が高まり、ニックからの影響を公言するミュージシャンも多い。ドリーム・アカデミーが1985年に大ヒットさせた楽曲「ライフ・イン・ア・ノーザン・タウン」は、ニックに捧げられた。また、ブラック・クロウズのリッチ・ロビンソンは、ニックの影響でギターのオープンGチューニングを使うようになったと語っている。 2000年、NMEが、当時の現役ミュージシャンからの投票で「最も影響力のあるミュージシャン」を選ぶ調査を行い、ニックが9位に選ばれた。また、生前に発表された3枚のアルバムは、いずれも2003年に、ローリング・ストーン誌によってオールタイム・ベストアルバム 500に選ばれた（『ファイヴ・リーヴス・レフト』283位、『ブライター・レイター』245位、『ピンク・ムーン』320位）。2004年には、未発表音源とリミックスを収録したアルバム『メイド・トゥ・ラヴ・マジック』が、全英アルバム・チャートの27位に達した。 2006年のアメリカ映画『イルマーレ（The Lake House）』で、ニックの楽曲が使用された。また、ニックの楽曲のカヴァーとしては、ブラッド・メルドーによる「River Man」、チャーリー・ハンターによる「Day Is Done」（ヴォーカルはノラ・ジョーンズが担当）、マーズ・ヴォルタによる「Things Behind The Sun」等がある。 .
