Hailing from Somerville MA, The Lothars began in 1996 as an experimental indie band featuring three thereminists and an electric guitarist. During the course of several albums, though, the group has moved toward a more improvisational electroacoustic trance/drone sound. The Lothars tend to favor unusual performance situations: some of their live venues have included an underground mine shaft, two different planetariums, a rave in Vermont, live silent film accompaniment, a state forest, art galleries, a church chapel, and a community garden center. Lothar and the Hand People was a late-1960s psychedelic rock band known for its spacey music and pioneering use of the theremin and Moog modular synthesizer. The band was notable for being "the first rockers to tour and record using synthesizers, thereby inspiring the generation of electronic music-makers who immediately followed them."
