Rajasthan, the «Country of the Kings» in the desert of India, is the home of some of the richest and most diverse traditions in Indian art and culture, demarcated by the Swamps of Kutch, in Gujarat, to the South, the Arawalli Mountains to the East and the Sindh, in Pakistan, to the West. MAharaja is a group gathering together the leading figures of the musician castes of Rajasthan. Outrageously elegant and beautiful, malicious and majestic, these musicians, poets and shamans reflect in their music the sumptuous surroundings of their region. Mahara Mc Kay was born in New Zealand. Her mother is Swiss and her father part Maori, part Scottish and part English. They moved to Switzerland when she was 10 and she won the title of Miss Switzerland 2000. She later started working as a DJ, bringing out a “chill-out” compilation CD with selected tracks from different artists called "Moana” and two of her tracks have since been featured on Café Del Mar Vol.12 & Vol.14. Maharajapuram Santhanam , ( 1928 - 1992 ) was one of the greatest Carnatic music vocalists. He was born in Sirunangur, a village in the state of Tamil Nadu. He followed the footsteps of his father Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer who was also a Carnatic singer. Besides singing, Maharajapuram Santhanam was very good in composing. He wrote many songs on lord Muruga and Kanchi Shankaracharya (Maha Periyavar). He was the Principal of Music college in Sri Lanka. Later he came and settled in Chennai.
