This retrospective term can be applied to two separate genres.

One is usually reserved for bands from the early American hardcore punk scene and the more contemporary bands who try and emulates that style.

The other refers to electronic tracks produced in the early 90's, a large period of growth for Hardcore. It has lots of piano rolls, bouncy basslines, breakbeats, plenty of female vocals and classic "rave" sounds. .
