Desert Rock is not identical to Stoner Rock but there is much overlap. Desert Rock has more of an expansive and windswept sound, using acoustic instruments or heavy and slow wah-wah to achieve these effects and can have more emphasis on extended soloing or subdued trance-like passages than repetitive full-on grooves. It has a more spaced-out psychedelic vibe, suggesting being lost in the desert on peyote. The genre began at the same time as the stoner boom with Kyuss and has a more folky, country-esque feel at times than the groove rock or stoner doom of their contemporaries, and also includes the more psychedelia-inclined bands that arose with grunge such as Screaming Trees. .
