Dimmu Borgir is a symphonic black metal band from Norway. "Dimmu Borgir" means "Dark Cities" or "Dark Fortresses" in Icelandic and Old Norse. The name is derived from a volcanic formation in Iceland, Dimmuborgir. Dimmu Borgir started as a melodic black metal band in 1993. Formed by Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv, the band released an EP in 1994 entitled Inn i evighetens mørke ("Into the Darkness of Eternity" in English). Born and raised in the ex Soviet Union, Dmitri Vaganov a.k.a. Dima, was introduced to music at an early age. Starting as a drummer, and later finishing music school majoring in percussion instruments, Dima was influenced by many styles of music, including Russian, European and American folk, pop, and rock. It wasn't until his early teenage years when he developed interest in electronic music, influenced by bands like C+C Music Factory, Snap, KLF, Ice MC, 2 Unlimited, and many others. Jerry Dimmer, the man behind Dim Dim, resides in Bruxelles, Belgium, creating his own musical universe just outside of most known genres, electronic, pop or otherwise. Refusing to get a "normal" job all these years, he was once a professional cartoonist and also professional musician who backed and produced for a few successful pop bands and dance bands in Europe. He also created video game music and illustrated children's books, but always returns to his own private world of Dim Dim when he is on his own time. His cartoons characters seem to still reside inside many of the songs....
