It is in the minimal use of polyphony, harmony, melody, and other such conventional means of music that the extreme effect of space comes into the work. This spatial emptiness is the profound 'coldness' in Lab Report's music. To realize that the artist forms his medium through the use of purely deviated and generally condemned sounds is to realize that the artist has no morality. In the 'ethics of music' Lab Report's work is entirely criminal. Hence the inherent anxiety that is the foundation of the tones expressed and the tones distressed. But it is not just the sounds and...
Creepoid is another one of those buzz-worthy local bands crawling out from basements of homes/makeshift practice spaces/recording studios lately in Philly. On their debut EP Yellow Life Giver, they use a reel-to-reel tape machine circa ’56 to help document their evolution. Yes, they are another lo-fi act flooding the indie music landscape, but Creepoid’s raw, gritty production perfectly compliments these four eerily engaging tracks. They open the album with “Rotten Tooth” which is filled with the spirit of Kurt Cobain and that 90’s Grunge angst all heroined out. In “Pink Tag Sale”, you’ll experience a dreamy Left Coast vibe that...
The Kinsey Report is an outgrowth of the Chicago-based band Big Daddy Kinsey and the Kinsey Report. After their father passed on in 2001, the Kinsey brothers kept the band together and have put on some of the most memorable barroom blues/rock shows in a very competitive Chicago market. Chicago blues fans are a particular lot, and the Kinsey Report does not disappoint. Catch them if you can, you will be in for a fun night! Their unique style does not feel redundant even after a long show, and there are as many upbeat dancers as there are soulful excursions....
Reportaz was established in 1982 in Poznan, Poland by Andrzej Karpinski and Piotr Lakomy. The group emerged from the society of young visual artists, with punk and new wave roots of the 80's. The music evolved throughout time, but never followed any specific trend or had any commercial connotations. The musical and lyrical formula of the group concentrated on creating reports from daily life, not art. During the socialist period of Polish history the group's music was promoted behind the iron curtain with some help from independent labels from Great Britain, USA, Belgium and Italy. Some of the music was...
The collaborative work of Jonathan Borges and Shannon Kennedy of Pedestrian Deposit could be described as highly composed, often abstract sound textures combined to create dynamic experimental music that draws on the duo’s widely contrasting auditory obsessions. Borges’ use of crude yet disciplined electronics, tape loops, field recordings, and controlled feedback manipulation contrasts against Shannon’s use of self-designed stringed instruments, bowing techniques and amplified wood and metal, resulting in music that is both raw and refined. Pedestrian Deposit bears elements of electro-acoustic sound, musique concrete, classical, industrial and harsh noise, but cannot be confined to any one genre. Jonathan Borges...
