During the height of 80's Ska revival, The Swinging Cats were signed, for a short period, to the 2 Tone label. The line-up changed constantly over the short period the band was in existence (pratically on a weekly basis). For a while there was also a girl on backing vocals, Val, who was going out with Jerry Dammers of The Specials at one point. The Swinging Cats were a Coventry based Ska band, formed at the end of 1979 and after replacing Holly and the Italians on The Selecter's March 1980 tour, 2 Tone offered them a one off single...
In 1980 John Barrow and Gaz Birtles founded The Swinging Laurels. Gaz had been previously fronting a Ska/Rock band in Leicester, United Kingdom, The Newmatics, where John would make regular guest appearances on sax. It was during this period that Gaz and John decided to experiment with an old Elka organ Drum machine and a Roland SH1 Mono synth. John went out and bought an AKAI 1/4" 2-track Reel to Reel tape recorder and they experimented with writing and recording sax and synth tracks. At this point in time they were mostly instrumental tracks. This relationship soon developed into a...
The Swinging Blue Jeans are a five-piece 60s British merseybeat band, best known for their proto-rave-up hit single "Hippy Hippy Shake" (also known as "The Hippy Hippy Shake"). Intriguingly, while the song sounds rather Beatles-clone like, the Beatles did in fact do a cover version of this song for the BBC. The Swinging Blue Jeans had a spell of moderate success, breaking into the U.S. with the aforementioned hit but also charting again and again in the U.K. such as with the top 5 cover track "You're No Good". Sadly, they seemed to fly along with the all-pervading merseybeat success...
Swingin' Utters is an American punk rock band that formed in the late 1980s. Having begun in Santa Cruz, California, the band moved to San Francisco where they are now based. They have been signed to Fat Wreck Chords since 1996. As well as being classed as a "punk revival" band (reminiscent of UK 1970s bands such as Stiff Little Fingers, The Damned, Sham 69 and Eddie & the Hot Rods), Swingin' Utters have increasingly shown themselves to be influenced by Irish folk, particularly The Pogues. The Utters paid homage to their influences with a stellar cover of Cocksparrer's I...
Formed 1986 in Galway in by art students Eamonn Dowd and Doug Steen with Joe Wall on bass and Seamus Sullivan on drums, The Swinging Swine were soon joined by Joanne Loughman on vocals and Hugh O’Carroll on fiddle with John Lalor replacing Joe Wall who was committed to The Stunning. Despite building a considerable live following the band only released one EP before calling it a day in 1990. .
