Lucy received an ukelele as a gift so she started writing songs and decided to form the band. According to their Twitter: "Combine a dash of equal parts; old-time, mountain, bluegrass, gypsy, rag, polka. folk., punk, pop, with the whistle of Andrew Bird." The Michelles began in March 2005 in London, England when Tim Lalonde met fellow expatriates Gustaf Heden and Dean Rostron. Lalonde, raised in Richmond, Virginia, had dropped out of college and relocated to Europe earlier that year.
