It's very difficult to give an exact definition of this style, because there are relatively few bands, which play it. Each of them is in its own way original and differs from the others. Generally jazzcore is a music style based on jazz and mixed up with extremal styles like hardcore, punk, grindcore, metal, mathcore, noise. Odd timings and dissonances are typical for jazzcore. Sometimes compositions are almost "glued" from different pieces. Besides guitars and drums also wind-instruments and keys are often used.
The father and the founder of this style is John Zorn, who in 1989 released the album "Spy vs. Spy". He mixed up free-jazz with speed and drive of punk and then continued experimenting with jazzcore with his project Naked City .
