The Mojo Gurus are a rock and roll band from Saint Petersburg, Florida. They perform mainly in and around the Tampa Bay area. The argument has been made that rock 'n' roll is dead. Well, if it is, The Mojo Gurus have refused to attend the funeral. These four guys from the Tampa Bay area of Florida play as if the burden of saving the genre lay squarely upon their shoulders. Led by singer/songwriter Kevin Steele, the Gurus come off as determined to remind us of something too many people have forgotten... the spirit in which rock 'n' roll was...
Ogurusu Norihide (小栗栖憲英, born august 8, 1977) might be the most extreme example of the compelling new laptop folk genre which several artists in the Carpark Records stable (see also Greg Davis, Takagi Masakatsu) have been exploring in recent years, falling much nearer to the experimental acoustics of Richard Youngs and Steffen Basho Junghans than the folksy electronic of Boards of Canada or label mate Marumari. Clearly influenced by minimalist composers like Philip Glass and Steve Reich, Norihide's work is obsessed with repetition, variation, and negative spaces, demanding deep listening. A Shinto priest, Norihide seems captivated by notions of cleanliness...
The Gurus are a power pop influenced psychedelic rock band from Barcelona, Spain. Made up of musicians Josep Pons, Emili Ramirez, and Serio Bartel, the group has released four albums through Rainbow Quartz records since they formed in 1996. Their self-titled debut album, 2004's 'The Gurus', was modeled after The Beatles' classic album 'Revolver' It received favorable reviews from Exclaim Magazine, Spill Magazine, and the Ottawa Express. The latter referred to the album as "a gem from some hipster's garage sale" with a "warm, dreamy, pretend-every-day-is-sunny feel". The group released a sophomore work titled 'The Swing of Things' in 2006....
the sounds of mid-20th Century southern Americana. The Mojos heap together hillbilly blues, old country, folk, and bluegrass, inject it with the melody of British Invasion pop, and fire it all out with the breakneck energy of the best garage/punk/rock n' roll. The duo's playing is still tight and electric (sounds like there's five of 'em, not just two!), and Matt's songwriting has advanced from damn great to unfuckingbelievable. There's something slightly magical about these cats' trip - they take all of these well-tread musical elements and somehow make them sound as fresh, current, and exciting as any new thing...
