Grandaddy voit le jour à Modesto (Californie) en 1992, lorsque le guitariste et chanteur Jason Lytle (par ailleurs employé d'un centre de traitement des eaux usées) invite Kevin Garcia (basse) et Aaron Burtch (batterie) à le rejoindre. Trois ans après arrivent Jim Fairchild (guitare) et Tim Dryden (claviers).
