Conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen was born in Helsinki in 1958 and studied at the Sibelius Academy. In 1979, he made his conducting debut with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He was Chief Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra for ten years (1985-1995) and Director of the Helsinki Festival in 1995 and 1996.
