Il vit actuellement à San Diego, en Californie. Mamady Keïta est né en 1950 à Balandugu, un village situé dans le Wassolon (province de Siguiri) près du fleuve Fé, en Guinée. Son père est maître chasseur et fida tigi (maître des plantes et guérisseur). Il est initié au djembé dès l’âge de 7 ans par Karinkadjan Kondé, djembéfola de son village.
