In the Spring of 1999, Death Cab for Cutie songwriter/frontman Ben Gibbard had some time on his hands and a batch of songs running around in his head that didn't seem quite right for his band. A series of recordings resulted in two lo-fi releases (a five-song self-titled CD and the Envelope Sessions cassette tape) on the Bellingham, WA scene-documenting Elsinor label under the one-off moniker All-Time Quarterback
There have, so far, been three releases under the name and the "straight to Walkmen" cassette release The Envelope Sessions (which included "Underwater", which was later rerecorded by Death Cab for Cutie for a 7" single on Sub Pop). Both were released on Bellingham, Washington, label Elsinor, and a small mini-tour occurred to support the releases. Gibbard went back to Death Cab for Cutie to record their second album.
In 2002, with both original releases out-of-print, Barsuk Records released the All-Time Quarterback album on CD. The album contains the best of both releases, along with an outtake from the original EP sessions and a video for "Plans Get Complex" (which was shot in a variety of locations across London, including Regent Street and a London Underground train). Currently still available, the album has been the most recent action under the All-Time Quarterback name. .
