Hamlet Machine formed in 1991. The duo, originally, was formed as a special collaboration between legendary visual kei frontman Issay (of Der Zibet fame) and electronic artist Tatsuya. The duo made their debut on the "Dance 2 Noise 001" omnibus in October of 1991, and, due to Issay concentrating more on his Der Zibet project, Hamlet Machine only did a few shows a year. In 1998, the duo made their second appearance on the "Satori - A Tribute to Bauhaus" omnibus, and seemed to disappear in 1999.

With Der Zibet officially split, Hamlet Machine seemed to go full force, and returned in 2000 with a mini-tour. In late 2000, the duo signed to the indies label, Addiction Records, and in October of 2001, the duo released its first mini-album, "Evil Flower". The album was extremely well received by the indies scene, and the duo embarked on an extensive tour, which spanned for two years.

In April of 2002, the duo released its first full length album, "Trance-Mission", which was, again, a huge seller in the indies scene. In June of 2003, the duo ended its rather extensive tour, and seemed to relax for a few months. However, by March of 2004, the duo was back on the road and touring. Weirdly, the duo didn't release any material, but made up for it by touring extensively. Hamlet Machine would continue to tour through most of 2005 and 2006, but took a year off in 2007.

In 2008, the duo were back to touring, but didn't release any material as of yet, making it six years since their last effort. However, the duo only toured one time that year, and embarked on a hiatus, due to frontman Issay's former group, Der Zibet, reforming in 2009. Since Der Zibet's reformation, Hamlet Machine have yet to tour in five years, and haven't released any material in over a decade. .
