Helen Kate Shapiro (born 28 September 1946) is an English pop singer, jazz singer and actress. She is best known for her 1960s UK chart toppers, "You Don't Know" and "Walkin' Back to Happiness". Shapiro was born at Bethnal Green Hospital in the East End district of Bethnal Green, London. Her early childhood was spent in a Clapton council house in the London borough of Hackney, where she attended Northwold Primary School and Clapton Park Comprehensive School until Christmas 1961. Originally from a "nowhere place" near Winchester, Ruth learned violin from an early age, before teaching herself guitar as a busker on the streets of the south coast of England. Vagrantly gravitating to London's east-end, via Edinburgh, she settled on the post-industrial waterways, where in 2007 she formed River Rat Records with fellow conspirator James Hurst (Lola Colt, Victor Menace). Independent of a record label, Kid Theodore has managed to play major festivals and concerts including 2008 & 2009 Sundance Film Festival, NYC's CMJ Festival, The Joint (Hard Rock Cafe, Las Vegas), X96’s Big Ass show. They have appeared in SPIN magazine and have had many news and radio appearances including KEXP Seattle. Kid Theodore was chosen by Billboard and TAXI as the number one indepent band in the western US in 2008. The Shapiros were formed in 1994 by Bart Cummings and Pam Berry. Despite the band's brief existence--formed on September 7th, 1994 and broken up by the end of the month--they released 4 singles and 2 compilation tracks, all produced by Velocity Girl's Archie Moore. All of their work is available on a compilation CD. .
