アース・ウィンド・アンド・ファイアー (Earth, Wind & Fire) はアメリカの伝説的なファンクミュージック・バンドである。 全盛期はモーリス・ホワイトとフィリップ・ベイリーのツインヴォーカル、重厚なホーン・セクションと程良いコンピューターの打ち込みによる電子音を取り入れたのが特徴であった。1980年代半ばには、その大きな売りであった生のホーン・セクションに、他のバンドに先駆けてコンピューターの打ち込みによる電子音中心のバンド形式に変え、実験的な音作りも取り込んだ。現在は、パーキンソン病にかかってしまったモーリスに変わって、フィリップが中心メンバーとして活動している。 モーリス・ホワイトは初期はジャズ・ドラマーとしてラムゼイ・ルイスのバンドに参加していた。彼のバンドを離れた後、1969年にシカゴにて、『ソルティ・ペパーズ』を結成、キャピトルからシングルを残す。1970年には活動拠点をロサンゼルスに変え、バンド名もアース・ウィンド・アンド・ファイアー（以後EWF）と改名。占星術によるとモーリスは土、風、火の要素があるからと言う事からと、宇宙論を結びつけ、Earth, Wind & Fire（土と風と火）と名づけた。（当時の人気バンド、ブラッド・スウェット・アンド・ティアーズの模倣という説もある。）ワーナーと契約、モーリスの兄弟のヴァーダインにフレッドを含めた10人の大所帯バンドとなる。2作リリースするがヒットはせず。 1972年にコロムビア・レコードに移籍、フィリップ・ベイリーが加入。コロムビアには以後1990年まで在籍する。1973年にHead To The Skyをリリースし、ゴールド・ディスクを獲得する。1975年にはThat's the Way of the World（『暗黒への挑戦』）を、同名の映画のサウンド・トラックとしてリリースするが、映画はヒットせず。この映画にはモーリスも出演しており、彼等の貴重なライヴ映像も見ることが出来る。 1976年にモーリスは自己プロダクション、カリンバ・エンタテインメントを設立。モーリスは、"Boogie Wonderland"に参加しているエモーションズ等をプロデュースしている。1978年にはCBS/コロムビアの元、ARCレコードを設立。 1980年に2枚組の大作Faces（フェイセス）を発表した頃から、彼らのサービス過剰とも言える音楽性がリスナーに飽きられ始める。1983年に発表したElectric Universe（エレクトリック・ユニヴァース）では、ついに大きな売りであったホーン・セクションを捨て、電子楽器中心のサウンドを展開させるが、人気の凋落に歯止めを掛けることはできず、活動を一時停止、各メンバーはそれぞれソロ活動に移る。フィリップ・ベイリーは1983年にフィル・コリンズのプロデュースでChinese Wallをリリースし、"Easy Lover"をヒットさせる。彼は以後も不定期ながらソロ活動をしている。モーリスも1985年に唯一のソロ・アルバムとなるMaurice Whiteをリリースし、"I Need You"をヒットさせる。 1987年にTouch the Worldをリリースし、活動を再開。1990年代に入ると、モーリスはプロデューサー業に専念するようになるが、1994年の全米ツアーには参加せず。この頃よりモーリスはパーキンソン病に罹ったため、1995年にライヴ活動をリタイア、以来のEWFの活動はフィリップが中心となっている。 2004年にモーリスと共にEWFは来日公演した。2007年にはスタックス・レコード（コンコード・レコードにより復活）より、EWFのトリビュート・アルバムInterpetationsをリリース。モーリスはエグゼクティヴ・プロデューサーとしてこのプロジェクトに参加。 .
