Since its inception in the year 2000, Etnika has been ‘the band who are single-handedly spearheading the renaissance in Maltese roots music’ both locally and internationally. Through its on-going research and resulting performances, it has showcased some of the last and most prominent members of the folk-music tradition including the late folk-singer Il-Budaj and musician Il-Ħammarun. Locally it has created a newly found sense of tradition amongst the newer generations. The story of the group stretches back to 1995 when Sami Baruh and Mahmut Akyalcin first joined forces and began producing their singularly unique electronic noise. In 1998 together with assisting artists they gave their first performance as Etnik Sentetik at Kemanci Rock Bar, then, Istanbul's leading live music venue. This lead to an ongoing adventure of weekly performances at aforementioned venue, gathering a growing number of fanatic listeners, groupies and dancers, who followed them to concerts, throughout the city / country.
