The four members of The Stiphnoyds started playing music together in Warren, Oregon around 1977. After one of the kids uncles turned them onto The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, the teens were blown away and immediately began playing punk. By 1978, the group had played the few small underground clubs available in nearby Portland and joined The Alternative Arts Association, an organization of a dozen or so Portland punk bands who were trying get their new brand of rock music heard. In 1979, Greg Sage of The Wipers took The Stiphnoyds under his wing and helped them produce their first seven inch 45 rpm entitled, "Afraid Of The Russians". That same year, a Stiphnoyd show at The Earth Tavern was recorded live and three songs became part of a Portland punk compilation entitled, 10-29-79. The band also appeared on Greg Sages' History Of Portland Punk, Mike Lastra's Punk Documentary entitled, "Northwest Passage, The Birth Of Portland's D.I.Y. Culture", A live album out of Rome Italy entitled, "The Stiphnoyds Get Buried Alive" as well as numerous bootlegs. Highly influential-The Stiphnoyds are an important part of Pacific Northwest punk rock history. .
