The Literary Greats are a band of multi-instrumentalists who took a grass roots approach in making their newly released self-titled album. Self recorded in a church studio and living room with the AC and refrigerator turned off to avoid unintended white noise, this record was composed with the understanding that the product could be both trivial and sobering in the same instant. While not setting out to solve the world’s problems, this quintet from Houston, Texas attempts to document the simple nuances of human nature at its core.

Like the city they call home, their musical compositions are both urban and rustic with the underlying song serving as the foundation. Electric guitars are intertwined with both clean and overdriven tones while the occasional acoustic finger picking or classical piano finds it way from texture to forefront and back again. Every sound has been placed into the composition with a purpose whether it is beautiful, harsh, sweet or out of place and the elements live together like a family, steady yet endearingly imperfect. A wide range of comparisons have been made to such groups as The Wallflowers, Wilco, Matthew Sweet, and The Jayhawks but the list has grown to the point that listeners will have to judge for themselves.
