The Armorial Movement arose under the inspiration and direction of the writer Ariano Suassuna, with the collaboration of a group of artists and writers from the Northeast region of Brazil. The movement was officially launched in Recife on 18 October 1970, with a performance from the Orquestra Armorial and a visual art exhibition in the São Pedro plaza in the centre of the city.
