Overkill jest jednym z pierwszych zespołów grających thrash metal. Nazwa zespołu pochodzi od tytułu utworu grupy Motörhead. Overkill powstał w 1980 roku z inicjatywy basisty D.D. Verniego oraz perkusisty Rata Skatesa. We wczesnym okresie swej działalności grupa grała głównie covery takich grup jak Iron Maiden, Riot, Judas Priest, D.O.A, Motörhead i The Ramones. Urge Overkill are an alternative rock band from Chicago that attracted underground attention in the late 80s and early 90s.
