Professor Longhair – właśc. Henry Roeland "Roy"Byrd (ur.19.12.1918 r. w Bougalusa stan Luizjana USA, zm. 30.01.1980 r. w Nowym Orleanie stan Luizjana). Pierwsze kontakty z muzyką Byrda miały miejsce w wieku kilkunastu lat w Nowym Orleanie. Początkowo był stepującym tancerzem, a następnie zainteresował się perkusją. Jednak instrumentem, który przyniósł mu sławę był fortepian. Jego styl gry ukształtował się pod wpływem Stormy Weathera, Roberta Bertranda i Tutsa Washingtona. W czasie II wojny światowej służył w wojsku. Po powrocie z wojny zaczął grać regularnie w klubie Caldonia Inn w Nowym Orleanie. Tam też przylgnął do niego przydomek "Professor Longhair".
