Bernoldus Niemand was one of the many names under which James Phillips, the pioneering South African rock musician, performed during the 1980s. Born in Springs on the East Rand (near Johannesburg) in 1959, Phillips grew up under Apartheid, and South African politics influenced much of his music, both in terms of content and style. He performed in a variety of bands, including Corporal Punishment, Illegal Gathering and The Cherry Faced Lurchers. He was part of the ground-breaking Voëlvry rock tour of 1989. Phillips died of injuries following a car crash outside Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape in 1995. .

Joe Niemand is the frontman of Niemand, and has been writing music since he was a teenager, growing up in the Eastern Cape. He completed writing his first song at the age of just 17. He fronted the band Niemand, which saw him crossover from being a songwriter behind the scenes into a rock star. The band’s debut single ‘Words’ was a huge hit, and spent months in the Top 40 of many charts.
