Singapore has an urban musical scene, and is a center for rock, punk and other genres in the region. The 1960s produced bands like The Quests, who had hits like "Shanty", "Don't Play That Song", "Jesamine" and "Mr Rainbow"; as well as other pop-rock bands including The Thunderbirds, The Trailers, The Western Union Band, October Cherries and The Silver Strings. Folk music includes the ethnic Chinese, Malay and Tamil sounds.

Currently local bands and solo artistes whom have reached a certain amount of popularity in Singapore and/or internationally are Firebrands, Stompin' Ground, Ling Kai, Ronin, SavingSomeone, Anna Judge April, Electrico, Force Vomit, 4-Sides, Vermillion, West Grand Boulevard, Plainsunset, Etc, Caracal, Popland, The Great Spy Experiment, Sky In Euphoria, Punk rock bands like Rancor, Saw Loser (formerly known as Pug Jelly), Power Metal bands like Malex , Post-hardcore band A Vacant Affair and Experimental Hardcore band For Better Endings, death metal band Rudra (famous for creating the genre "Vedic Metal") and blackened death metal band Meza Virs. Also notable is the grindcore band Wormrot, who recently signed to Earache Records in January 2010. .
