The now defunct Reading-based Saloon spent four years quietly building a following among John Peel's indie masses through a string of low-key singles before releasing their debut album (This Is) What We Call Progress in 2002. Like Track And Field cohorts Tompaulin, Saloon have a passion for lilting melodies and docile guitar 'n string symphonies, but where the former often find themselves aligned with Belle and Sebastian, Saloon veer off in the direction of Stereolab and Movietone with celestial Moog washes and shyly seductive multilingual lyrics. Wonderfully off-kilter tracks "My Everyday Silver" and live fave "Girls Are The New Boys"...
The Tango Saloon is an experimental tango band from Sydney, Australia. Their self-titled debut, a tango-flavored album with a twist of spaghetti western, was released in 2006 by Ipecac Recordings, the American record label run by Mike Patton and Greg Werckman. The followup, Transylvania was released in 2008. In June 2007, the band was seen supporting Ipecac label-mates Peeping Tom on the East-coast leg of their Australian tour. The Tango Saloon's lineup includes a number of notable musicians, including drummer Danny Heifetz from Mr. Bungle and Secret Chiefs 3. Formed in 1997, the band consists of Jean Pierre Duhart (vocals, guitar), Roberto Arancibia (bass) and Ricardo Barrenechea (drums). The following year the band got a nomination for Best New Band...
Black Bear Saloon started following the break-up of Larne band Throat. Two members of Throat, Willy Mundell and Russell Crookes, formed Dutch Schultz with ex-Pulszar drummer Darren Gallagher. Concurrently Crookes was also involved in a project known as The John Ford which featured Throat's Mike Barr on drums and Jeremy Smyth of Los Cabras and Lowend. The John Ford broke up in late 2006 after repeated attempts to find a singer, including an audition with future Black Bear Saloon vocalist Aaron Abernethy. In early 2007 Barr and Crookes starting writing material with Mundell again, re-uniting three quarters of the Throat...
Nashville based, Valentine Saloon, clawed it's way onto the map to set the record straight that it wasn't just country music thriving in the scene. A good blend of infectious grooves, heavy sleaze, punk aggression, melodies that melt your soul and witty lyrical lines. Not many bands, to this day, can compare to the live show that this band set standards of. You may catch former members playing out in: http://myspace.com/formerband http://myspace.com/100wattopera .
