Dungeon synth is atmospheric ambient music done primarily with keyboards and synthesizers. The themes are usually based around fantasy, paganism, and ancient, medieval times. There is often a noticeably lo-fi quality to the sound, usually in the form of vintage synthesizer patches and little effort to hide the "cheesiness" commonly associated with such instruments.
The musicians often have a strong connection to black metal, many dungeon synth bands being side-projects of artists whose main focus is black metal. The most recognizable and influential artists in the genre are Mortiis, Lord Wind, Wongraven, and Burzum (with the albums "Dauði Baldrs" and "Hliðskjálf"). .
