A term for an obscure hybrid style of music, characterized by "quirky" and whimsical lyrics over adventurous, often complex arrangements. The term started to be used by underground radio DJs in the mid to late 1990 to refer to a subset of songs from avant-garde groups like Renaldo and The Loaf, electronic musicians such as Dick Hyman or Perrey and Kingsley, progressive rock/art rock outfits like Gentle Giant, and the artier wing of new wave(for instance, Spizzenergi). In the period after 2000, a few live bands such as the Oblong Boys appeared describing their music as zolo. .
