The Caretaker Race were an indie pop band formed in East London in 1986 when singer/guitarist Andy Strickland (also a part-time music journalist) left The Loft. Strickland recruited Dave Mews (drums), Henry Hersom (bass guitar|bass), and Sally Ward (keyboards). The band's name came from a Star Trek paperback adventure. Gaining comparisons with The Go-Betweens, they initially released a brace of singles on their own Roustabout Records label before signing to the Foundation label in 1989. The Caretaker project began in late 1996 in Stockport, England by Leyland Kirby, undoubtedly inspired from the ballroom scene in Stanley Kubrick's "Shining". The first release played and extended this theme of altering 1920s and 1930s ballroom music creating an eerie and haunted soundworld. Subsequently the sound has become darker and often more abstract over time, moving away from the initial idea of a haunted ballroom into territories involving the mind and its abilities to recall memories. Currently The Caretaker is inspired by the topic of "Amnesia" and the brain's abilities to recall situations from the distant and immediate past....

There are, at least, three bands known as The Caretakers: 1) 60s garage rock band (from San Bernadino, CA, USA tag as Caretakers), who released four singles, on three labels. Best known for their cover of East Side Story (Bob Seger).
