İsmini Tolkien'in eseri "The Silmarillion"'dan alan Marillion bir çok progressive müzik sevenin oldukça yakından tanıdığı bir grup... Grup 1982 yılı başlarında İngiltere'de kuruldu. Kadrosunda ise vokalde Fish (gerçek ismi : Derek Dick), klavyede Mark Kelly, gitarda Steve Rothery, bateride Mick Pointer ve bass da Pete Trewavas bulunuyordu. Grup kurulduktan kısa bir süre sonra Aylesbury ve Londra'da bir çok tura katıldı ve konser verdi. Müziğini 72-82 arası Genesis'e benzetebileceğimiz grup Pink Floyd ve Yes etkilerini de barındırıyor. 1984 yılında Ian Mosley baterist olarak Mick'in yerine grupta yerini aldı. 1987 yılında "Clutching At Straws" turu sırasında Fish beklenmeyen bir şekilde solo kariyeri...
