Beastie Boys'un hikayesi MCA adıyla bilinen Adam Yauch (5 Ağustos 1964) ve Mike D. adıyla bilinen Michael Diamond'un (20 Kasım 1965) New York'ta Bad Brains konserinde karşılaşmalarıyla başlamıştır. Adrock adıyla bilinen Adam Horovitz (31 Ekim 1966) ise gruba, Rockland'deki Funky Four Plus One More şovunda katıldı. Fakat bu sırada grup son halini oluşturmamıştı.
