Tam adı Harold George Belafonte olan, 1927 yılında New York doğumlu sanatçı sekiz yaşındayken ailesiyle birlikte Karayip Adaları'na taşındı. Beş sene sonra New York'a geri geldikten sonra okul hayatına burada devam eden Belafonte 1944 yılında Amerikan Deniz Kuvvetleri'ne girdi. İki sene sonra ise askeri hayatın ve getirdiği sıkı disiplinin kendine göre olmadığını iyice anlayan Belafonte ilk önce Harlem'deki "Amerikan Zenci Tiyatrosu"na, daha sonra da "Drama Workshop"a girerek sanat hayatına atıldı.
