Melanie Fiona Hallim (born July 4, 1983) is a Grammy winning Canadian R&B singer-songwriter from Toronto, Ontario. She was born to Guyanese immigrant parents (mixed with black, Indian, and Portuguese ethnicities) and grew up in the inner city of Toronto. Fiona Soe Paing is Scottish/Burmese, and sings sometimes in Burmese (the initial track on the No Man's Land album, Tamin Sah Pade) sometimes in English, but mostly in an invented "no man's language", for which the special alphabet and font were designed, in happy synchronicity, by Daniel Burman. She was brought up in Aberdeen, North East Scotland, and early memories are of the sounds of her mum's records of Indian Ragas, African Hi Life and Hot Club swing being drowned out by the drones of her next door neighbour"s bagpipe practice.
