Winifred Atwell (February 27, 1914 - February 28, 1983) was a pianist who enjoyed great popularity in Britain in the 1950s with a series of boogie woogie and ragtime hits. Atwell was born in Tunapuna in Trinidad and Tobago. Her family owned a pharmacy, and she trained as a druggist, and was expected to join the family business, Winifred, however played the piano since a young age, and achieved considerable popularity locally. A San Francisco based political punk band originally known on their first 7" 1995 single release as Shotwell Coho, they later shortened the name to just Shotwell. The band has released numerous tracks via CD & vinyl through various small indie labels, the most widely distributed being Broken Rekids. The main consistent member has been frontman Jimmy Broustis, an ex-member of both Strawman and X-tal, for whom he also served as guitarist and occasional singer on those band's early 90's records. Shotwell Coho was the name used in the original 1994-96 incarnation of the San Francisco Bay Area based punk band now known as Shotwell. Their first SF gig was opening for the So Cal bands SUBLIME , STRUNG OUT and Santa Rosa's ska faves CONSPIRACY at the SF underground cooperative KOMOTION space in December of '94. They soon recorded a seven inch single for release on Broken Rekids with Kevin Army twiddling knobs and made a brief rambunctious Northwest tour.
