Tame Impala est né du précédent groupe de Kevin Parker, The Dee Dee Dums, qui mêlait des influences blues, jazz et rock psychédélique. Ce groupe était formé de Parker (à la batterie) et de Luke Epstein (à la guitare). Ils ont remporté la deuxième place au AmpFest de 2005 et terminé troisièmes la même année au cours de la finale nationale de The Next Big Thing. Riia mäest tuli alla grupp noori inimesi, nende seas ka Lunge ja Elgula. Nad tulid koolinoorte klubi ALO koosolekult, kuhu kuulus aktiivseid tegelasi peaaegu kõigist Tartu koolidest. Korraldati nii endale kui ka oma eakaaslastele ülelinnalisi üritusi (diskud, etendused, kohtumised jne) ning elati isekeskis muidu toredat elu. Selle klubi eestvedajaks oli Ilme Tiik, kes süstis poistesse mõtte, et miks ei võiks ALO klubil olla ka oma bänd. Mõeldud - tehtud, ja Riia mäest alla tulles otsustatigi bändi tegema hakata.
