Contrastate were formed in 1987 by Stephen Meixner and Jonathan Grieve. Their initial musical ventures were of a more improvisational nature, based on noise and volume (not to be confused with power electronics). Sounds emerged, sub-merged and re-emerged at varying painfully low frequencies with extremes of treble tonality. The idea was physical confrontation through sound. Nothing was ever released by Contrastate in this form, although some influences from this era are present on the first Lp “Seven hands seek nine fingers”. Contravene formed in the fall of 1999. We were an anarcho/peacepunk band with metal influences and political lyrics. We shared strong beliefs about equality, animal rights and (still are) strongly anti-racist/anti-homophobic. Even though there was a lot of negativity in our lyrics, since most of them were about problems and concerns that affect most of us on earth on some level, we hope that becoming aware of these subjects allows people to make changes in their own lives to help improve conditions for everyone, to increase solidarity among one another and to make the world a better place. There is more than one artist with this name: 1) Contraband was a short-lived super group featuring some of the biggest names in the 80's metal scene. They released just one album of good time hard rock before members went their separate ways. The band consisted of Shark Island singer Richard Black, L.A.Guns and former Guns N'Roses guitarist Tracii Guns, guitarist Michael Schenker of MSG, UFO and Scorpions fame, Vixen bassist Share Pedersen and Ratt drummer Bobby Blotzer.
