1970年に結成された、アメリカ合衆国マサチューセッツ州ボストン市出身のロックバンド。
The YardbirdsやThe Rolling Stones、Led Zeppelinなどのブリティッシュ・ロックというフィルターを通して、自国の音楽を表現しようとした。ブルースを基盤にしたハードロックに、ポップス、ヘヴィメタル、R&Bの要素を取り入れた音楽性は様々なアーティストに影響を与えてきた。
バンド結成当初、ドラマーだったSteven Tylerがボーカルとドラムスを兼任するはずだったが、目立たないので兼任をやめ、彼の悪友Joey Kramerがドラマーとして加入した経緯がある。なお、バンド名はJoey Kramerによる造語。
1970年代に第1次黄金時代を築くが、その代償とも言えるドラッグや人間関係の問題で、1980年代前半は低迷。全員が麻薬中毒の治療のため、更生施設に入院。これは、落ちても這い上がろうとした彼らの執念の表れとして、今も語り継がれている。
その後、ロック史にも珍しい復活（1985年）を果たし、商業的には1970年代を上回る第2次黄金期を築いた。
1998年の映画「アルマゲドン」のメインテーマを手掛けた。同映画のヒロイン女優、Liv TylerはボーカルのSteven TylerとBebe Buellの間に産まれた実の娘。
日本では、1970年代後半はKiss、Queen、Cheap Trickの陰で多少地味な存在であったが、1985年の復活以降は人気バンドとしての地位を確立した。来日回数も多く、1998年には海外アーティスト初の4大ドーム・ツアーを敢行した。
2001年にロックの殿堂入りを果たし、プレゼンターをキッド・ロックが務めた。他にも、今まで『ピープル・チョイス・アウォーズ』2回、『ビルボード・ミュージック・アウォーズ』6回、『アメリカンミュージック・アウォーズ』8回、『ボストン・ミュージック・アウォーズ』23回、『MTVビデオ･アウォーズ』12回、『グラミー賞』4回など、数々の賞を受賞している。『ローリングストーン誌』、『ヒットパレード誌』でも最優秀ロックバンドに選ばれている。『MTVアイコン』に選ばれた、初のロックバンドでもある。
2016年6月、ファラウェルツアーを行い2017年の解散を表明した。Steven曰く「潮時だからやるだけだ」。
2008年までに、アルバムだけで世界総売り上げは1億5000万枚以上。(アメリカだけで6,650万枚)
