LOUDNESS（ラウドネス）は、1981年に結成され同年の『THE BIRTHDAY EVE ～誕生前夜～』でメジャー・デビューを果たした日本のヘヴィ・メタル・バンドで、1985年の『THUNDER IN THE EAST』では米アトランティック・レコード傘下“Atco”レーベルよりワールド・デビューを果たしている。数度のメンバー・チェンジを経験しながらもバンドの核となる高崎晃（g）は不動のまま現在も活動中。オリジナル・メンバーの樋口宗孝（dr）は2008年に永眠している。 デビュー当時の彼らの音楽の下地になったのは、ディープ・パープルに代表されるブリティッシュ・ハード・ロックと、アイアン・メイデンを筆頭としたニュー・ウェイヴ・オブ・ブリティッシュ・ヘヴィ・メタルだが、海外進出を機に当時のシーンを席巻していたL.A.メタルにも接近。オリジナル・メンバーが高崎のみとなった1994年になると、'60年代のサイケデリック・ロックや当時のグランジ／オルタナティヴ・ロックからの影響を色濃くした『HEAVY METAL HIPPIES』を制作した他、'90年代後半からは“インド三部作”とも呼ばれるオリエンタリズム溢れるアルバムを次々に発表し従来のファンを驚愕させた。2000年にはラインナップをオリジナル・メンバーに戻し、音楽性も原点を意識したものに変化させている。 .
