"A Naifa" is a portuguese band formed in 2004 by Maria Antónia Mendes (vocals), Luís Varatojo (Portuguese guitar) and recently deceased João Aguardela (bass). Their music is inspired by Fado (urban folklore music associated mainly with lisbon and coimbra, but that has grown to “symbolise” –or stand for- the quintessence of “the portuguese soul”) but explores other influences merging into a pop-like sound. The composer Alexander Knaifel (Russian: Александр Кнайфель) was originally a cellist but had to give up the instrument due to a nerve inflammation. Thus Knaifel, born in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) in 1943, turned to composition. His teacher was Boris Arapov, with whom he studied in Leningrad from 1964 until 1967.
