Zu Beginn der 90er Jahre gründen vier junge Burschen, die zuvor dieselbe Highschool in einem Ort namens Germantown im US Bundesstaat Maryland besuchten, die Band Clutch. Die Formation besteht aus Neil Fallon (Vocals), Tim Sult (Gitarre), Dan Maines (Bass) und Jean Paul Gaster (Drums). Ihre erste 7inch "Pitchfork" weckt Interesse bei diversen großen Plattenfirmen, bis schließlich der Major Eastwest die Band unter Vertrag nimmt. Die Geschichte klingt so abgedreht, dass sie schon wieder wahr sein könnte: Man weiß einiges über Clutchy Hopkins, aber er sei verschwunden, ein Mysterium. Also wird die halbgroße "Wer ist Clutchy Hopkins?"-Schnitzeljagd im Internet inszeniert, zu der auch einige Filmsequenzen produziert wurden, was zwangsläufig zur Folge hat, dass rasch allerhand Verdächtige ins Spiel gebracht werden – DJ Shadow, Madlib, Cut Chemist oder Beastie Boy Money Mark, der bereits ein Instrumental-Album herausgebracht hat.
