The Characters formed in London (UK), with Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Ray Mercieca and fellow Maltese Band Mates Rayvin (Guitar), Adrian (Drums) and Gino (Bass). After gigging in London's top venues for a couple of years and doing some studio recordings, the band called it a day and everyone went on to do his own projects.Ray returned to Malta,and Gino after a stint in Germany touring with High & Dry, a Swiss/German/Maltese Rock band, returned to his home country as well. Every member in Character is a songwriter. Dave (guitar), Eric (bass) and William (guitar) were all fronting bands in Nashville handling the writing and vocals. Scott (drums) was recording entire records in his bedroom with himself on every instrument. Ryan (keyboards) and Luke (theremin) had been in countless bands around the same time. One spring day in 2001, the group of young musicians met at Eric's house to try something new: instrumentals. Drawing from influences such as Jeff Buckley, I Mother Earth, Nuno Bettencourt, and Rush, Character Nine combines a careful attention to melody, thoughtful lyrics, and thick body-rocking riffs to create a refreshingly unique Alternative sound. Performing in NYC over the last year has earned the band a solid base of loyal fans and strong relationships with bookers from a number of clubs including The Knitting Factory, Kenny's Castaways, and their current HQ, Arlene's Grocery.
