ディープ・パープルのギタリストとして既に音楽的にも商業的にも世界的な成功を得ていた リッチー・ブラックモアが、同バンドから脱退して新たに結成したバンド。その為アルバム・デビュー時は「リッチー・ブラックモアズ・レインボー(Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow)」と表されたが、セカンド・アルバムの頃には評価を受け「レインボー (Rainbow)」というバンド名へと改名した。
イギリス人のリッチー・ブラックモアが中心となって結成された為、一般的には「ブリティッシュ・ロック」に類するバンドとされるが、当初参加したメンバーのほとんどがアメリカ北東部のミュージシャンである。
コージー・パウエルやグラハム・ボネットにドン・エイリーなど、イギリス出身のミュージシャンも後に多数在籍することとなる。
このバンドでブラックモアは、ディープ・パープル期に培ったブルーズ基調のハードロックにバロック音楽の構成を融合させハードロックの代表的なギタリストの地位を揺るぎないものにした。
また、バンド・サウンドは後に訪れる重要なギター・リフとビートのヘヴィメタルの時代の基礎を築き上げたとされている。 .
