1926年に歯科医の家に生まれる。トランペットのみならず、常にニュー・コンセプトを取り入れジャズ界をリードし続けた“ジャズ界の帝王”。マイルスの歴史は、そのままモダン・ジャズの歴史といえる。1945年、 Charles Parker (as) のグループで本格的にプロ活動を開始。1950年代後半には John Coltrane (ts) たちを擁する自身のクインテットを結成し、1960年代後半のクインテットでモダン・ジャズの頂点に立つ。1960年代末からはエレクトリック・サウンドに傾倒、1950年代とは別人のように変身する。ファンク、ロックを取り入れたその音楽はジャズの領域を拡大させた。1975年に演奏活動を一時中断するが、1981年に復帰し、1991年に死去。 .
