Raphael powstał w grudniu 1996, a jego założycielem był basista Yukito, początkowo pełniący także funkcję wokalisty. Niedługo później dołączył do niego gitarzysta Kazuki, który został liderem zespołu (od początku zajmował się także projektowaniem okładek i wizerunkiem zespołu; założył nawet własne biuro, Hime Design Office). Ostateczny skład Raphaela, uzupełniony przez wokalistę Yukiego oraz perkusistę Hiro, ukształtował się w marcu 1997 roku, przy czym wszyscy muzycy mieli zaledwie około 15 lat. Raphael Saadiq ur. 14 maja 1966 w Oakland, California (naprawdę Charles Ray Wiggins) jest jednym z najważniejszych twórców współczesnego brzmienia soul i r’n’b – w latach 90-tych współtworzył formację Tony!
